Malakoff
Founded in the 1830s in Henderson County, Malakoff, Texas, evolved from a small milling community known as Caney Creek into a bustling town, officially named in 1855 after a Russian fort, notes the Texas State Historical Association. The town moved and grew around the railroad in 1880, later thriving on coal mining (1920s) and becoming famous for brick manufacturing (Acme Brick) and the mysterious "Malakoff Man" carved stones found in the 1930s. The "Malakoff Man" Mystery: In 1929, workers at a local gravel pit unearthed carved stone heads, believed by some to be prehistoric art and others to be a hoax.
