Athens Texas

Athens Founded in 1850 and incorporated in 1856, Athens, Texas, is the Henderson County seat, originally settled by E.J. Thompson and Joab McManus. Renowned as the "Home of the Hamburger," local "Uncle" Fletcher Davis is believed to have served the first hamburgers in the 1880s before taking them to the 1904 St. Louis World's Fair. Initially called "Alfred," it was renamed Athens and became the county seat in 1850 after earlier, failed county seat attempts at Buffalo and Centerville. Birthplace of Clint Murchison Jr., founder of the Dallas Cowboys.
