Lake Athens
Constructed between 1961 and 1963 on Flat Creek, Lake Athens is a 1,799-acre reservoir in Henderson County, Texas, designed for water supply, flood control, and recreation. Managed by the Athens Municipal Water Authority, it serves as a major recreational spot and is renowned for its, largemouth bass fishing and proximity to the Texas Freshwater Fisheries Center. Dam construction began September 25, 1961, and was completed in May 1963 to provide a reliable water supply for the city of Athens. The lake has faced challenges with invasive species, such as hydrilla and Giant salvinia, which are managed by the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department. While originally relying on the lake, the water authority began integrating groundwater wells in 2013 for increased drought resistance.
