Fairfield
Established in 1850 and named the county seat of Freestone County, Fairfield, Texas, was founded on land donated by David Hall Love, originally known as Mound Prairie. Known for its rich farmland, timber, and central location, it thrived as an early agricultural hub despite being bypassed by railroads. Today, the city is a historic community and a popular stop along I-45, roughly halfway between Dallas and Houston. The Freestone County Historical Museum is housed in the former 1879 county jail. The Fairfield Lake State Park and the nearby power plant, established in the late 1960s, played a major role in the local economy and tourism. The town was largely shaped by its role as the center of government and commerce for Freestone County, resisting the decline that often followed the lack of a railroad.
