Cedar Creek Lake Area
Cedar Creek Lake (officially Cedar Creek Reservoir) in East Texas was created in 1961–1965 by the Tarrant Regional Water District to supply water to Fort Worth and surrounding North Texas cities. It is the fourth largest lake in Texas, covering 32,623 acres, and is a popular recreational destination with a rich history of suburban development and tourism from the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex. The development of the lake sparked the growth of several surrounding towns, including Kemp, Mabank, Gun Barrel City, and Tool. The Texas Parks and Wildlife Department manages three islands on the lake (totaling 160 acres) as a Wildlife Management Area for aquatic birds. Initially, the area grew as a leisure spot for boating and fishing in the 1960s, a trend that continues today with many private homes and parks surrounding it. The reservoir was designed by Freese, Nichols and Endress Consulting Engineers and is supplied by Cedar Creek, a tributary of the Trinity River.
